When you re satisfied with the pattern(s) created, you have two options: Make sure the pattern you like best is currently visible and click OK This causes Photoshop to fill the current layer with the pattern you selected Make sure the pattern you like best is currently visible in the Tile History section of the window, and click the small disk icon below the preview to save the pattern as a preset This allows you to use it later to paint or fill areas of your image, as discussed in the next tip, Paint with Patterns Then, if you want Photoshop to also fill the current layer with the selected pattern, click OK Otherwise, click Cancel to return to the normal view without filling the image with the pattern

To make the color of a human face more vivid, first make sure the image you want to affect is open in Photoshop, and that the layer housing the face you want to edit is currently active Then, perform the following steps 1 Draw a selection around a person s face in an image Because faces are irregular shapes, I like to use the Lasso tool I usually set the Feather option to about 2 pixels, to soften the edges of my selection 2 Make sure the layer with the face is currently selected in the Layers palette, and choose Layer | New | Layer Via Copy or press CTRL-J (Windows) or CMD-J (Mac) 3 With the new layer highlighted in the Layers palette, change the blend mode to Overlay using the drop-down menu at the top of the palette 4 To cause the overlay to blend more with the image below and not look so harsh, reduce the Opacity of the layer to between 30% and 60% 5 If the edges of the overlay are still a bit harsh, you can use the Eraser tool with the Opacity set to 50% to slightly erase or soften the edges 6 Toggle the overlay layer on and off to see the before and after shots To see how I used this technique on a photo of my daughters, see the Creative Effects section of the color insert
