Give anyone the power of Photoshop and she ll eventually want to know how to fix a few blemishes in a personal photo It s no wonder, because Photoshop is an excellent tool for retouching human faces In fact, you might think of the new Healing Brush tool as a virtual plastic surgeon s dream To remove blemishes from photos of human faces, first open the file you want to affect in Photoshop Choose Window | Layers to reveal the Layers palette and move to the layer containing the person s face Then, perform any or all of the following tasks, depending on the type of blemish you re trying to remove: Select the Healing Brush tool from the toolbox and an appropriately sized brush tip to paint those blemishes away This works best for blemishes such as crow s feet and wrinkles because Photoshop automatically adjusts the color in the healed areas to match the surroundings Select the Patch tool from the toolbox to select the blemishes away by first drawing a selection around an area to be removed, and then dragging it over a clean area (the area with which to replace it) This works best for somewhat larger areas of blemishes, such as patches of acne, leftover food, or (as in the next example) spots of paint However, this tool doesn t work well when the area of the blemish is larger than any other clean area within the face As with the Healing Brush tool, Photoshop automatically adjusts the color in the patched areas to match the surroundings Select the Clone Stamp tool from the toolbox and an appropriately sized brush tip to copy a clean area and paste it over a blemish This works best for irregularly shaped areas, such as patches of acne or uneven skin, where the Patch tool would be difficult to select with In addition, because you can adjust the opacity of the Clone Stamp tool, you can achieve a more refined cover-up than with either of the Healing Brush or Patch tools Select the Smudge tool from the toolbox and an appropriately sized brush tip to slightly smudge away a tiny blemish such as a spot or freckle Select the Blur tool from the toolbox and an appropriately sized brush tip to blur areas containing harsh color changes or rough patches of skin.
